Climate footprint

Our work aims to help achieve net zero in Norway and worldwide as quickly as possible. But what are we doing within our own organisation?

The Norwegian Climate Foundation has been certified as a Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) since 2017. Through the Eco-Lighthouse scheme, we have access to data and tools that support our ongoing environmental work. As part of our commitment to the scheme, we publish an annual climate and environmental report.

We are also a member of Klimapartnere – a network of public and private organisations working together on emission reductions and green value creation.

Our climate measures

The Norwegian Climate Foundation is a knowledge organisation with a small staff. We have no significant direct greenhouse gas emissions. Our largest emissions come from air travel and from purchases of computers, mobile phones and other hardware. Services bought from a range of large and small suppliers also contribute. We can influence these suppliers to reduce their emissions by setting requirements and expectations.

To reduce our own emissions, we have chosen the following measures:

  • Reducing the need for travel: Transport is our largest source of emissions. Limiting the need for travel is therefore our most important climate measure. For example, we hold many of our meetings online throughout the year.
  • Flying less: When travel is necessary, staff are encouraged to go by train or bus. Air travel should be avoided wherever possible.
  • Meat-free events: We do not serve meat at our own events.
  • Using less paper: As a general rule, we do not publish reports or briefing papers in print. If we do decide to print a publication, the print run will be based on actual demand.
  • Extending the life of computers and phones: Staff must always consider repairing equipment such as phones and computers first. If repair is not possible, they must check the second-hand market before buying new equipment.
  • Green commuting: The offices of the Norwegian Climate Foundation must be easy to reach by public transport. Staff are encouraged not to drive to work.
  • Climate requirements for suppliers: Every year,we contact our largest suppliers from the previous year. These suppliers are told that they must meet the following requirements to remain a supplier to the Norwegian Climate Foundation:
    1. Environmental certification: The supplier must hold an environmental certification (e.g. Eco-Lighthouse).
    2. Climate targets and measures: The company must set its own climate targets and implement measures that reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in line with these targets. This work must be ongoing.
    3. Carbon accounting: The company must keep annual accounts of its greenhouse gas emissions and make them public.
    4. Fossil-free: The company must not use fossil energy directly.
    5. Climate requirements: The company must set climate requirements for its own subcontractors.

See an example of the letter we send to our suppliers (in Norwegian).

Our climate strategy is regularly reviewed.

Carbon accounting

The Climate Foundation keeps greenhouse gas accounts with both Eco-Lighthouse and Klimapartnere. Over time, our accounting for indirect emissions from purchases of goods and services has become more comprehensive and detailed. As a result, our reported emissions have increased.

Eco-Lighthouse

We have reported to Eco-Lighthouse every year since 2016. You can view the 2025 report here. It is also available as a PDF.

Klimapartnere

We have also reported our accounts to Klimapartnere since 2013. In 2019, they introduced a new methodology that lets us report more of our indirect emissions (Scope 3) by converting our purchases of goods and services into emissions. Our emissions are therefore higher in this report. The sharp rise in reported emissions over the past two years is largely due to the purchase of software development services for tilnull.no.
